This week sees the release of the brand new Star Wars film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There has been some confusion surrounding this film in terms of when it is set, what it’s about and whether or not it follows on from last year’s The Force Awakens in the saga etc, which we will answer now. Rogue One is an anthology film, by which we mean it is a standalone film that isn’t part of the episodic series, and is set between Revenge of the Sith (Episode 3) and 1977’s Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope, (the one where we first meet Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo et al).
In fact Rogue one is supposed to end minutes prior to the beginning of Episode 4 and revolves around a ragtag group of rebels trying desperately to get hold of the blueprints/plans for the Empire’s new superweapon, the Death Star.
So now you know when it is set in terms of the overall saga, which is all well and good, but what are the future plans for this colossal franchise? Well retailers can relax because there will be at least one Star Wars film per year until at least 2020. This is great news for those of us who sell Star Wars products as it means that this brand will remain a strong pop culture presence for quite a few years yet. Don’t believe us? Well at the recent world premiere of Rogue One, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked to run down the plans for the Star Wars film slate and told Variety.com the following:
“We’ve made Star Wars VIII, shot Star Wars VIII. The title will be announced at some point. That comes out in 2017. And then we have another standalone film, which is the origin story of Han Solo, that will come out in 2018. 2019 will be Star Wars IX, with director Colin Trevorrow. That’s being written. We have another standalone Star Wars story that’s in development, and we don’t have any other specifics to share with the world right now, but I can guarantee there will be more Star Wars films”.
So there you have it from the head of Disney himself, this isn’t a flash in the pan and the Star Wars bubble is definitely not going to burst. There will be many more Star Wars movies to come, which means the possibility for product tie ins and big sales for quite a few years yet.
